This product is obtained by purifying and drying fresh bile. Ox bile promotes the growth of the typhoid/paratyphoid/enteritis group of bacteria and inhibits the Gram-positive bacterial flora apart from Enterococci; it is therefore utilized in the preparation of selective culture media. 1 g dry bile is equivalent to approximately 10-12 g fresh bile and is employed at a concentration of 10-20 g/liter.

Assay on bile acids (calc. as cholic acid and anhydrous substances): 45 %; pH (5 % solution): 5.5-7.5; TLC-test: conforms; total ash (800 °C): 15 %; water (acc. to the method of K. Fischer): 5 %; in ethanol 80 % unsoluble matter: 1 %.
