Merck KGaA History relative to EMD Chemicals, Inc.

Merck KGaA History

EMD Chemicals shares the more than 300 years of experience of its' German parent, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

Merck KGaA has roots back to the 17th century with the family pharmacy of Friedrich Jacob Merck. By the late 1800's, the E. Merck catalogs included more than 10,000 medical and technical products, and had expanded its' operations to New York.

Following World War I, Merck forfeited many of its affiliates abroad, among them Merck & Co., Inc. in the United States. An agreement between the companies stipulates that the name "Merck" is used exclusively by Merck & Co., Inc. in the United States and Canada. In Europe and the rest of the world, the "Merck" name belongs to Merck KGaA (the former E. Merck).
Today, Merck KGaA is recognized as a world leader in the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of ethical pharmaceuticals, generic medications, liquid crystals, and specialty chemicals.

The Merck KGaA product range includes more than 20,000 items from prescription and over the counter drugs to reagents, pigments, laboratory supplies, liquid crystals, pharmaceutical and cosmetic ingredients and more.
With headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, Merck KGaA operates more than 200 companies in 55 countries - including production facilities at 60 locations in 26 countries - and employs 34,000 employees around the world. Worldwide revenue in 2001 was EURO 7.5 billion.
