Xirona® - Travel through the World of Colors
EMD has developed several color travel pigments under the brand name Xirona®. Two different technologies have recently been developed to produce this exciting new effect.
One form has been produced by coating synthetically produced silica flakes with metal oxides such as titanium dioxide or iron oxide. As the silica flakes have their own interference color, which is determined by their thickness, the color of a Xirona® pigment changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
In the other technology, typical mica-based pearlescent pigments consist of extremely thin and smooth platelets of mica coated with a single layer of metal oxide with a high refractive index. Both color and gloss are generated by reflection of light rays at the layer surfaces and the interference of these light rays with each other. In contrast to single layer mica pigments, EMD's mica-based Xirona® Color travel pigments include several layers of titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide. These so-called multilayer pigments exhibit extraordinary color intensity. In addition, the Xirona® pigments show significant color travel depending on viewing angles.
Color Travel Pigments at a glance
The Xirona® Color Travel pigments may be used in all cosmetic products, in combination with traditional pearl luster pigments as well as both organic and inorganic colors. They disperse well in both oil and water.
To achieve the best visible color travel effect use almost transparent, translucent and semi-opaque base formulations together with transparent round, concave or vaulted packaging.
The following pigments are included in our Xirona® range:
Xirona® Caribbean Blue
Our first color travel pigment type based on the new technology (mica, titanium dioxide and silica). The color changes from turquoise under perpendicular view to blue to violet under oblique view.
Xirona® Volcanic Fire
It displays a color travel from red to copper to gold with a green hint. Based on our exclusive mica, it combines strong brilliance and high chroma of the interference effect with this distinctive color change, depending on the viewing angle.
Xirona® Indian Summer
A very attractive pearl pigment with high coverage creating intense metallic shades with red-gold to bronze to green-gold color travel. The stunning color travel effect is achieved using our patented technology of silica flakes coated with iron oxide.
Xirona® Magic Mauve
A highly transparent, very attractive interference pigment best suited to creating silvery pastel shades with lilac-red to silver to green-blue color travel. The stunning color travel effect is achieved using our patented technology of silica flakes coated with titanium dioxide.
Xirona® Kiwi Rose
It provides a brilliant strong color travel from green to silver to peach. The stunning color travel effect is achieved using our patented technology of silica flakes, coated with titanium dioxide.
Xirona® Nordic Sunset
It shows a beautiful display of colors from silver-green under perpendicular view, through silver-red to green-gold under oblique view. The observed color depends on the direction of the light and the viewing angles.
Xirona® Golden Sky
is a new color travel pigment based on silica flakes and has extraordinary and surprising properties. Like the other pigments in the series it shows high luster and a fascinating color travel, which changes depending on the viewing angle. Like a space walk it shows a color travel from gold to elegant silver-green ending in blue.
